Although broadband should be straightforward, there are a number of variations depending on your ISP (Internet service provider) , router supplied and the ADSL plan you have subscribed to. Providing your broadband is fully activated we will can install your router and link to your computer(s) as required. Where your broadband is playing-up we can investigate the issues and with the co-operation of your ISP get your connection working again.
Ordering Broadband
Unfortunately ordering this service in the UK can take five to ten working days depending on who you use. This is pretty shocking as most western countries call roll this out with a new phone connection in a matter of days. So you need to plan ahead when getting a new service installed. The two common types which are available are cable based (e.g. Virgin) or phone system based (e.g. BT and most other providers). For the BT based services your phone line needs to be active before broadband can be installed.
Changing Broadband provider (Migration)
There are entire web-sites dedicated to this topic so here us a summary:
When you decide you wish to change your ISP for whatever reason you need to speak to your current ISP and request a MAC code (migration activation code). They are obliged by the law to provide this so don’t be fobbed off with excuses or promises of fantastic discounts.
Warning: Never use or agree to the term “cancellation” or you could be without broadband for a month!
Once you have your MAC code (often sent by email) speak to the new provider you wish to use, telling them you are migrating and give them your MAC code. After about ten working days you should be able to switch to your new provider.
To make the changes happen you will either need to change your router settings (with the settings provided by your new ISP) or fit the new router supplied by your new ISP.
If this is too technical for you we can do it for you.
Some points to consider:
- Many cheap deals come with very poor support and unreliable broadband
- Most plans are for a year plus
- You can get combined deals including telephone and television/cable/satellite
- There a variety of speeds available, you should aim to get at least 8Mbps, many ISP’s fail to provide the speed they market. Sometimes there are technical reasons for this.
